FLORENCE — The Florence Buffaloes (1-7, 0-5) were outmatched early and often by the Lago Vista Vikings (5-3, 3-2) falling by the final score of 42-0.

Florence (1-7, 0-5 13-2A, Div. I) was nearly nonexistent on offense, finishing with 15 total yards and no first downs. Combin that the nearly 400 yards of total offense garnered by the Vikings, and Florence was in for a long night.

The only thing that even resembled an obstacle for Lago Vista were penalties, which negated multiple long scoring plays. Lago Vista (5-3, 3-2 13-2A, Div. I) jumped out to an early 21-0 first quarter lead.

Florence has been plagued by injuries all season, and its already short bench grew shorter as more players went down during the game.

“It’s tough right now,” said coach Paul Smith. “We have 17, 18 healthy bodies right now. That’s it. But these kids show a lot of courage to come out and play every week. They see their teammates and friends going down, but they continue to come out here.”

Even when everything went right for Florence, it still went wrong.

A miscommunication on the Lago Vista side on the second-half kickoff enabled the Buffs to claim ball at the Lago 25.

But its best field position of the night resulted in a blocked field goal, followed by a long touchdown drive by the Vikings.

Florence hosts McGregor (7-1, 4-1) next week, while Lago Vista travels to Salado (1-6, 1-3).
