Ellison continued its strong defensive play, especially on the boards, and knocked off a longtime nemesis in the process.
Limiting the opposition on second-chance opportunities, the 5A No. 13 Lady Eagles held off 3A No. 3 Abilene Wylie in the fourth quarter for a 39-36 win Thursday in the first day of the Key City Tournament in Abilene.
Ellison senior guard Kenesha Saygo led all scorers with 14 points, hitting a pair of 3-pointers, while post Brianna Gray added nine. But it was on the boards, where sophomore Jordana Porter had seven rebounds and tied 6-foot-1 senior post Kaitlyn Shearer with four points.
“We contained them to one shot (on offense) — we had 28 rebounds to their 18 — and I think that made a difference,” said Ellison coach Sherry McKinnon. “Kaitlyn made a difference in the middle, … she had a lot of defensive stands.”
The Lady Eagles (10-1) play El Paso Franklin at 9:30 a.m. today at Hardin Simmons.
