When Ellison begins its defense of the District 8-5 crown the Eagles will sport an 8-4 record and be fresh off an appearance in the Pflugerville Panther Holiday Classic championship.
But Ellison coach Alberto Jones is still waiting to see the best from his young Eagle team. In fact, despite coming within two points of defeating Pflugerville in the final, Jones said he didn’t feel his team was playing all that well.
Part of that is the high standard Jones has for his team, and part of that is the Eagles’ youth, significantly younger than the 2012 squad, which featured multiple players with two or more years of varsity experience.
“This team is completely different than last year’s team because this year’s team is young,” Jones said.
But the Eagles also boast talent in addition to that youth. Senior Ronnie Edwards scored 22 in the final against Pflugerville and was named all-tournament along with Malik Malone. Fred Jackson also had 12 points for Ellison against the Panthers while freshman Isiah Jasey added 10.
So, despite the Eagles’ inexperience, Jones was eager to see how good they can be once they come together.
“This year’s team has a whole lot of new faces,” Jones said. “We’ve just got to jell a little bit better and play defense a little bit better.”
