Even after 1,238 members of the Ellison community voted for him as KDHPressbox.com Player of the Week, Eagle pitcher Sam Weston deferred the praise to his team.
It was Weston who had two RBIs and seven strikeouts in a win against Copperas Cove last week.
And it was Weston who pitched a complete-game shutout in a win against Shoemaker on Thursday.
But Weston, who defeated Lampasas senior Maria Salinas by 35 votes, was as happy for his team as he was for himself after being named KDHPressbox.com Player of the Week.
“It feels good to know that the community’s behind me and that they’re supporting Ellison baseball,” Weston said. “It just feels good to be recognized.”
Salinas, who led at multiple points during the contest, was nominated after scoring two goals in each of the Lady Badgers’ first two 4A playoff games. She finished with 48 percent of the final vote while Weston nabbed 50 percent.
Also nominated were Harker Heights’ Darius Mitchell — a UTEP signee who finished fourth in the 100-meter dash at the Texas Relays — and Belton’s Kolton Boyd, who pitched the Tigers to a one-hit shutout of Killeen.
Ellison had been playing well itself before a loss to Waco Midway on Friday, and Weston said it was because of everyone on the team.
“I think all of my teammates, we’re coming together as a team,” Weston said. “We’re doing what needs to be done.
“Each and every one of us has a job and we’re getting the job done. It just so happens that I’m getting my job done (also). Every role is important.”
And while the Eagles remain a game back of fourth-place Harker Heights after the Knights lost to Belton on Friday, Weston said he and his teammates believe they can find a way into the top four by the end of the season.
“We strongly believe we can make it,” Weston said. “We’re just taking it one game at a time, just doing what we need to do.”
To this point, the approach has worked well for Weston, as he is Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
