Area boys competing at the UIL 5A State Wrestling Championships in Austin had short days Thursday. The girls, however, went late into the night.
Ellison’s Fallon Christian (128-pound class) and Shoemaker Dineesha Jones (110) both went 2-0 on the first day of the state tournament, while five others were still wrestling consolation matches late Thursday night.
Christian and Jones assured themselves a spot in Saturday’s schedule by reaching their championship bracket quarterfinals and can finish no worse than sixth.
Copperas Cove’s Adrienne Burson, Ellison’s Keyira Gibson and Shoemaker’s Anne Ford were all still competing in the 185-pound division, while Shoemaker’s Maya Little (128) and Killeen’s Deborah Moore (215) were still alive in their respective classes at presstime.
On the boys’ side, Copperas Cove’s Julian Doubleday (182) and Ellison’s Kenneth Pitts (285) both went 1-2.
Ellison’s Mark Byong (170) and Lady Grey Wolves’ Harmony Maitland (165) both went 0-2
