STEPHENVILLE — Florence’s Matthew Mellette and Shane Schober came within a point of advancing to the Class 2A boys doubles state tournament, but their Calliburg counterparts, trailing 5-4 in the deciding third set of a regional playback match, fought off a handful of match points and rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory Tuesday at Tarleton State University.

Mellette and Schober began the day with a 6-1, 6-2 loss in the regional championship match to the No. 2 seed from Brock. The Florence duo bounced back with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Crawford that set up the playback matchup for second place.

The girls regional begins today, with Florence’s defending state singles champion Tristen Brunson and the doubles team of Rebecca Horton and Mackenzie Payne in action.
