The Florence Buffaloes ended the 2013 football season with a 77-0 loss at Cameron Yoe. As it turns out, that was also the final game of the Paul Smith era.

Smith resigned as head coach and athletic director at Florence on Monday after the team finished 1-9, including an 0-7 record in District 13-2A, Div. I.

“I felt like I’m at the point where I can’t do anything to make them better and I’ve done everything that I could possibly do,” said Smith. “I appreciate the opportunity that they’ve given me. I’ve learned a lot. I’ve met a lot of good people here, but I can’t live with losing.”

Smith, 51, was head coach at Florence for five years, where he went 13-37. His overall record as a head coach is 67-54-1 and Smith will finish out the academic season at Florence.

Smith is a native of Bastrop, but said he hasn’t thought of the next career move just yet.

“I know that there’s always a next opportunity and I’m excited about that,” Smith said. “I wish Florence the best.”

Before taking over at Florence, Smith was the head coach at Ignacio High in Colorado and also coached a team in England.

While in Colorado, Smith also spent time as a coach at Fort Lewis College, an NCAA Division-II program.

Smith’s most successful season at Florence was 2012, when the Buffaloes finished 4-6, including a 2-5 district mark.

Well its about time. Smith quit on this team half way through the season. When you tell the refs at a football to never stop the clock in a game that you are only losing by 2 scores it shows you are a quitter. The whole town of Florence will be better off without him. The funny thing is the day he resigned there were over 50 high school kids that signed up to be in athletics, they just didn't want to play for a quitter like Paul Smith!!!!!
