Florence Lifters Medal Again

Amanda Stiles and Shelbie Long of Florence High School earned medals at the state powerlifting championship Friday in Corpus Christi.

CORPUS CHRISTI — Florence’s Shelbie Long and Amanda Stiles added new hardware to their collection after medaling at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association’s Class 2A state meet at the American Bank Center on Friday.

Stiles finished fourth in the 181-pound division while Long came in fifth in the 200-plus pound division.

A competitor’s score is decided by the sum of the maximum weight of the lifter’s best attempt in the squat, bench press and dead lift. A lifter is allowed three attempts in each event.

Stiles was making her second straight trip to state after finishing seventh in the 165-pound division last year.

She earned her first medal after fighting back from a hamstring strain.

Stiles finished 80 pounds behind state champion Whitney Kitchen from Hawley. Coleman’s Jolyn Zarate finished second while Little River Academy’s Taylor Curlee came in third.

Long was making her third consecutive trip to state after finishing fourth as a freshman and third last season.

Frankston’s Raven Paul took first with a 760-pound total while Jeana Castro from San Angelo Grape Creek, Claudia Avila from Hebronville and Lindsey Reyna from Wichita City Falls View round out the top four.
