The Lady Buffaloes did not start the day the way they wanted, but first-year head coach Kelly Stephens was pleased by the end of the night.

Florence fell to Ellison in its first match at the Gatesville tournament, but rebounded with a win over Hillsboro to move into the consolation semifinals against Troy.

“I thought we played pretty good against Ellison,” Stephens said. “They are a big school, and they’ve got some big hitters. … I thought we played really well against Hillsboro. We played together.”

Ellison beat Florence to send the Lady Buffaloes into the consolation bracket, where Stephens’ team responded with a 25-12, 25-17 win against Hillsboro.

Florence (2-3) plays Troy on Saturday at 4 p.m. with a spot in the consolation finals on the line.
