MIDLOTHIAN — It was difficult to determine which was more miserable Thursday night — the weather or the Belton Lady Tigers.

No. 9-ranked Flower Mound scored 13 runs in its final two innings and routed the Lady Tigers 16-2 in the first game of a best-of-three Class 5A area-round playoff series at the Midlothian Softball Complex.

“That was embarrassing. That’s the only way to sum that up,” said Belton coach Matt Blackburn, whose team dipped to 20-12 and will return to Midlothian for the second game at 7 tonight. “That was the first time in my nine years at Belton that a team had a runner leave a base early to show mercy on us.”

Through the first three innings, the game appeared to have the makings of good one. Belton left the bases loaded in the first without scoring and posted two runs in the third to make it a 3-2 game. In the fourth, however, the Lady Jags took advantage of their solid hitting along with mental and physical Belton errors to blow the game wide open.

Flower Mound sent 11 batters to the plate in the seven-run fourth, highlighted by an RBI double from Sydney Springfield and a two-run triple from Annelise Oswalt to put the Lady Jags ahead 10-2.

It didn’t get any better in the fifth for the Lady Tigers as Flower Mound rang up another six runs, paced by a two-run double from Kelly Powell and another RBI hit by Oswalt.

Oswalt, a sophomore, went the five-inning distance and fired a three-hitter with six strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Sidney Holman pitched into the fifth. The Lady Jags finished with 15 hits.

Down 3-0, the Lady Tigers collected their only runs in the third. Kirsten Whiteside led off by beating out a single to the left side.

Tiffany Beaver followed with a bouncer that shortstop Mauri Jamele fielded and threw way wide of second, allowing Whiteside to score and Beaver to reach third. Beaver scored soon after on a Skylar Stewart groundout.
