LAMPASAS — Steven Jazdyk has been through the battles that come with playing in District 8-3A for the Lampasas Badgers.

Thus, when the he and the team headed into the locker room with a six-point lead, he was confident that they would pull out a much-needed win over the Burnet Bulldogs and extend their season.

But Brock Foster and the Bulldogs had second thoughts.

Despite getting near the century mark in rushing, the season is over for Jazdyk and the Badgers after a 42-28 loss to Burnet on Friday at Badger Field.

“We’ve had games like that all season that were shootouts,” Jazdyk said. “It’s the games that we look forward to.”

The loss ended any playoff hopes the Badgers (3-7, 1-4 District 8-3A) had to get into the playoffs.

Jazdyk had 27 carries for 99 yards and two touchdowns to go along with a 4-yard receiving score.

Logan Irvin completed 10 of 13 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown while junior Cale Walker ran for 53 yards and caught four passes for 79 yards.

“I threw it to him, and from there on it was all him,” Irvin said about Walker. “After he caught it, he was gone.”

The Badgers traded blows with Burnet (7-3, 3-2) and led 20-14, but the Bulldogs took control of the game in the second half.

Jazdyk was held to just 20 yards on 10 carries in the second half and Lampasas did not get inside the Burnet 30 until its final offensive drive of the game.

Foster paced the Burnet attack rushing for 183 yards and four touchdowns to go with a 16-yard receiving touchdown.

Foster had touchdown runs of 12, 12 and 7 yards to help Burnet turn a six-point deficit into a 15-point lead early in the fourth quarter.

“We’re not the kind of team that is able to score at will,” first year Lampasas coach Brian Emerson said.

The contest marked the last game for Jazdyk, Irvin and the other seniors on the Lampasas roster.

“It’s meant everything to me,” Jazdyk said about playing for Lampasas. “It’s built me up as a person. I started on the seventh-grade C team and worked my way up to the top. I got to finish my season out here at Badger Field, I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

Jazdyk was a force in the opening quarter.

With Lampasas trailing 7-0, the Badgers fed the ball to Jazdyk early and often to get on the board.

Jazdyk capped an 11-play, 71-yard opening drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. The senior had nine carries for 62 yards on the drive.

“We came out with the momentum,” Jazdyk said. “We were going to drive the ball down their throats. Our whole goal was to come out firing and bring it to them. We accomplished that in the first drive.”

With Burnet defense focusing on Jazdyk, Irvin and Walker made things happen through the air.

Logan hit Walker for a 52-yard pass that set up another 2-yard touchdown run by Jazdyk and put the Badgers ahead 14-7 with 1:38 left in the first half.

But neither offense would go into the locker room quietly.

Burnet marched 77 yards in four plays on their final drive of the half. The drive was capped by Derek Kiser’s 20-yard touchdown connection to Darius Johnson with 56 seconds left in the first half.

Kiser completed 3 of 4 passes for all 77 yards in the last Burnet drive.

Lampasas’ ground game exploded thanks to an Avery Gary 59-yard run and a Burnet horse collar penalty that gave the Badgers a first-and-goal from the 4-yard line.

Irvin found Jazdyk on a rollout on the following play to help the Badgers reclaim the lead.

Irvin led the team on one final scoring play. He capped the nine-play, 75-yard drive with a quarterback dive from a yard out to cap the scoring with 3:22 remaining.

“We kept fighting like Badgers,” Irvin said. “I think that’s the most Lampasas has passed in I don’t know how long.”
