Michael Kelly shot a nine-hole 53 to lead the Patterson boys golf team to the Killeen ISD middle school championship Tuesday at Stonetree Golf Club.

Other members of the Cavaliers were Nicholas Mintz (60), Trent Salyer (61), Curtis Emmons (66), Brendan Mitchell (73) and Ayden Powers and Kochan Page.

Kelly finished second individually.

Patterson’s team tally was 240, 16 ahead of runner-up Liberty Hill. Nolan (263) was third. Live Oak Ridge (276) was fourth. Union Grove (280) was fifth.

Brandon Horton led Liberty Hill with a 58, and he finished third individually. Other scorers for the Lions were Braden Gaballo (59), Noah Toth (69), Trevor Giese (70) and Jose Cancel (72). Competing as medalists for Liberty Hill were Anthony Hatten-Hillier (66), Eric Campos (72) and Jace McNeal (75).

Nolan’s Richard Gutierrez won the individual championship with a 47.

On the girls’ side, Union Grove earned top honors with a team score of 274. Makenna Melvin (67) and Sumin Park (68) led the way, bolstered by Madison Camden (69), Ashley Turck (70) and Katie Jimenez (72). Patterson’s girls finished second with a score of 303. Azaria Williams-Andrews shot a 68, followed by Amara Hise (76), Isabella McBride (78), and Abigail Deem (81).

Live Oak Ridge’s Jaquasha Knight carded a 61 to win the individual championship. Melvin was second. Williams-Andrews placed third.


Liberty Hill’s boys golf team placed fourth in their second tournament of the season at Fort Hood’s The Courses of Clear Creek.

The Lions finished with a team total of 253. Patterson and Live Oak Ridge tied for first at 229. Patterson was declared the winner after a scorecard playoff.

Anthony Hatten-Hillier led Liberty Hill with a nine-hole score of 60. Others competing for the Lions were Brandon Horton (63), Noah Toth (64), Jose Cancel (66) and Eric Campos (70).


The Union Grove tennis team won three of the four singles brackets May 13 in a match against Palo Alto.

Yazan Chtay won the seventh-grade boys bracket. Serenity Hoffman won in seventh-grade girls singles, and Rawan Tarabeh topped the eighth-grade girls.

Grace Constantian, Jaylin Rawls, Reagan Quinn, Jeffrey Tran and Cassidy Melvin all played well and made it to the second round of play, but fell in close matches.


The Audie Murphy tennis team had a big day against Manor in their tennis match at Killeen High School.

Anelys Pabon and Sierra Tremble placed 1-2, respectively in seventh-grade girls singles.

Lele Kinere and Talisa Laboy finished 1-2, respectively in eighth-grade girls singles.

Ania Martin and Kirsten Parks won the eighth-grade girls doubles bracket. Teammates A’dena Brown and Azaria Atkkins were second.

Rashad Brown and Travarious Edwards won the eighth-grade boys doubles bracket.

Tyson Hudson and Calen Prevo were the top team in eighth-grade mixed doubles.


PATTERSON 7TH 6, UNION GROVE 7TH 2: Alex Fernandez, Roderick Polk and Michael Kelly each scored twice and the first-place Cavaliers pulled away with a big second half after a 1-1 halftime tie.

Luca Lokker scored both goals for the Grizzlies, the first of which gave Union Grove a 1-0 lead.

Evan Ernst and Austin Dollard led the defense for Union Grove (3-1-1).

Fernandez had two set-piece goals as well as two assists. Polk scored on a pair of headers. Davide Rossi also tallied an assist.

Quinlan McKinney and Onyx Rodriguez were defensive standouts.

UNION GROVE 8TH 3, PATTERSON 8TH 2: Mark Levin, Diego Fierro and Cameron Howard each scored a goal and the Grizzlies edged Patterson in a battle of first-place teams to remain perfect on the season.

Jack Byse, Quintin Howard, Daniel Goldberg and Derrick Mandell led the defense for the Grizzlies (5-0).

Union Grove led 2-0 at halftime, but the Cavaliers quickly equalized in the second half with goals from Phillip Saucedo and Nicholas Dawson.

The Grizzlies finally broke the stalemate in the final minute.

Josue Colon assisted on one of Patterson’s scores. Makkai Rogers was a defensive standout.

NOLAN 8TH 5, RANCIER 8TH 3: Uriel Gomez, Efren Chavez and Noriel Gomez were offensive standouts in the Mustangs victory.

Rian Rivera, Uriel Leon and Yi Yong led the Nolan defense.


UNION GROVE 7TH 7, PATTERSON 7TH 0: Sarah Moffitt scored four first-half goals and the Grizzlies completed an undefeated regular season.

Evi Romero added two goals and Olivia Sullens had one for Union Grove. Emily Blakeney recorded two assists.

The clean sheet was kept by great defensive performances from Keiley Tierce, Mackenzie Mansell, Kanaiya Blackmon, Nora Heely, Reese Wilson, Linzie Baker, Abigail Laitano, Damaris Ayala and Analese Villa.

Keeper Mikayla Perez turned away several shots and was a defensive standout for the Lady Cavaliers. Patterson finished the regular season in third place.

PATTERSON 8TH 2, UNION GROVE 8TH 1: Maddie Pigg and Jasmyn Morgan scored first-half goals and the Lady Cavaliers held on to finish the regular season at 4-1.

Pigg scored a poacher’s goal and Morgan poked in a through ball to put Patterson up 2-0 at halftime.

Alisia Comacho helped the Lady Cavs keep the offensive pressure on in the opening half.

Aaliyah Hatton scored the lone goal for the defeated Lady Grizzlies.

Abby Irwin, Gloria Kim, Caitlin Whiteley, Claire Rodriguez and Jasmine Crutcher were other standouts for Union Grove.
