Dozens of athletes from the Killeen area have qualified for the AAU Junior Olympic Games track and field meet beginning July 31 at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Mich.

To qualify, the athletes had to post a top finish at the Region 19 meet June 28 to July 1 at Converse’s D.W. Rutledge Stadium. Region 19 includes much of Central Texas, the Hill Country and all of the Rio Grande Valley.

To advance, athletes needed a top-six finish in running events, a top-five effort in field events, a top-six finish in relays or a top-four finish in a multi-event discipline (decathlon, pentathlon, etc.).

In the men’s age 17-18 division, Killeen High graduate and state meet discus bronze medalist Bobby Smith won the discus and the shot put.

Killeen resident Alfred Pemberton swept the 100 and 200 meters.

Shamel Allwood, Bob Santiago, Demarkus Kahey and Ryan Harmon of the local A Running Start Track Club won the 400 relay in 42.17 seconds. A Running Start also qualified for the 1,600 relay.

On the girls’ side, Harker Heights Angelica Brown captured a win in the 400.

In age 16-17 boys, Killeen’s Amir Paris and Michael Adams posted wins in the 200 and 400, respectively. Paris was runner-up in the long jump.

Killeen’s Tre’Jon Spiller and Harker Heights’ Kyjuan Otis shined in age 14 boys. Spiller won the high jump and long jump, and Otis won the shot put and javelin.

Fort Hood’s Donovan Evans won the 100 hurdles and was runner-up in the triple jump.

Spiller also won the pentathlon and qualified for two hurdles events.

In age 14 girls, Killeen’s Markayla Tucker won the 200 hurdles and ran a leg for Texas Havoc’s winning 1,600 relay team with Autumn Wilson, Meghan Wilcox and Victory Ifah. Texas Havoc’s second team was runner-up.

Texas Havoc also swept the top two spots in the 400 relay.
