Jordan Garza said he is taking this bowling season one step at a time.
But the Ellison bowler already racked up a pair of accolades, winning Most Valuable Bowler honors for the CenTex District last week and winning the KDHPressbox.com Player of the Week award Thursday.
Garza narrowly edged Salado senior Ryan Simmons with a total of 385 votes, good for 45 percent of the total vote.
Simmons, who won the shot put and discus events at the Bulldawg Relays in Copperas Cove, garnered 361 total votes, good for 42 percent of the total tally.
Harker Heights junior C.J. Bobbitt was next with 102 votes after sending the Knights to the regional quarterfinals with the game-winning bucket in an overtime win against Flower Mound Marcus.
Also nominated were Lometa thrower Tricia Williams, who also won the shot put and the discus events at the Bulldawg Relays, and Killeen runner Brittany Mitchell, who won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races at the Bulldawg Relays.
This was Garza’s first nomination for KDHPressbox.com Player of the Week.
Garza said he was excited simply to be nominated. To win it nearly rendered him speechless.
“It’s a great feeling,” Garza said. “The athletes around this area, they’re really good, too. It’s a great honor to actually win it.”
Garza has only been bowling for eight years and said he only started because he wanted to give the sport a try. Then he fell in love with it.
“The competition,” Garza said. “It’s all about the competition.”
After conquering the district competition, Garza said his only goal is to win regionals.
But as it is, he already has a few noteworthy accolades to call his own this season.
