Gatesville had a home-course advantage, and the Hornets made the most of it.

With the District 8-3A cross country meet taking place in their own backyard, Gatesville’s boys team produced a third-place finish behind a pair of top-10 performers as Abate Hennessy and Austin Combs placed third and eighth, respectively.

The performance propels the Hornets team into the Region I-3A meet at Lubbock’s Mae Simmons Park on Nov. 2. The top three teams and top 10 individuals at the district meet advance.

The Lady Hornets were not as fortunate, but managed to send one runner to regionals. Jordan Brock qualified following her sixth-place showing.

Only one runner emerged from Lampasas. Danesha Toro qualified thanks to a ninth-place finish, which helped polish up an otherwise disappointing day.

Lampasas head coach James Allison expected a pair of Badgers would return to regionals, but a bout of bad luck eliminated them from the running.

Orlando Flores and Dustin Rumple both cramped up during the race, causing them to finish well behind where their coach expected.

Flores was in fourth place after the first mile, slipping to eighth place by the second-mile mark and barely crossed the finish line as the pain left him doubled over as he approached the finish line.

“I could tell it was not looking good,” Allison said.

Lady Badger runner Michaela Ellison was another potential qualifier, but a 16th-place finish left her out of the mix. Had Ellison qualified, however, she would have been unable to attend due to Lampasas’ tennis team competing at regionals on the same weekend.

Luckily, Toro’s performance gave Lampasas’ first-year coach something to cheer about.

“I get to drive to Lubbock,” Allison said laughing. “But it is good. She ran well, and she deserves it.”

Lometa sends two to regionals

Competing at Round Top-Carmine, Lometa produced a pair of top-10 showings individually, advancing one boy and one girl to the upcoming regional meet in San Antonio.

Sophomore Ivan Jasso qualified by placing sixth, while classmate Angela Arellano finished eighth in the girls’ division. Freshman Israel Enriquez was the next closest Lometa runner to qualifying, placing 13th overall.

The Region IV-1A meet will take place at the NSC Complex on the University of Texas at San Antonio campus Nov. 2.
