Derwin Graham added his second second-place finish this season, just missing first place by a second. The senior does however, add to an already-impressive senior year that includes three first-place finishes as well.
Graham took second Saturday at the Georgetown River Run Invitational at San Gabriel Park, finishing the course in 14 minutes, 55.5 seconds. He was right behind San Antonio Reagan's Daniel Vertiz (14:54.3), who won the boys' 5A-4A division.
Harker Heights' Michael Odeh (15:38.1) took fourth place overall, while Killeen's Alonso Rivera (15:53.2) took eighth. All three schools finished among the top 10 in team finish. Killeen and Heights finished fifth and sixth, respectively, while Cove took ninth place.
In the 3A-A division, Florence's Thomas Berg (17:24.4) took eighth, while the Buffaloes were sixth in the team standings.
On the girls' side, Killeen's Brittany Mitchell (12:15.6) was the highest finisher in the 5A-4A division, placing eighth. Heights' Kassandra Booker (12:34.8) and Cove's Rebecca Hawkenson (13:09.4) were their school's highest finishers, taking 21st and 48th, respectively. The Lady Roos took 10th in the team standings.
In 3A-A, Florence's Rebecca Horton (13:30.9) place 17th.
Tennis takes second in 12-5A
The Copperas Cove tennis team finished off its regular season with an 18-1 win at Shoemaker on Tuesday, capping off the season with a 29-4 win heading into the Region II-5A later this month.
The win total is a program record.
Cove finished second in District 12-5A behind longtime power A&M Consolidated. The Lady Tigers went 7-0, with Cove going 6-1 ahead of Belton (3-3), Temple (3-4), Harker Heights (2-4), Ellison (1-6) and Shoemaker (0-7). Bryan and Heights had their match suspended due to inclement weather, and will finish Friday with Heights leading 3-1.
Against Shoemaker, Cove dropped its lone match in boys singles. That was also the case in a 17-2 win against Bryan last Friday.
