BUDA — Harker Heights overcame a six-point first quarter and a slim halftime deficit to take the Buda Rebel Classic title Saturday with a 60-45 victory against Leander.

Cody Halvorson was named tournament MVP, and C.J. Bobbitt was named to the all-tournament team after the Knights outscored Leander 44-25 in the second half.

“We just came out and we started getting the ball on the inside,” Knight coach Celneque Bobbitt said.

C.J. Bobbitt had 12 of his team-high 16 points in the third quarter as Heights turned a 16-14 halftime deficit into a 40-28 lead by the start of the fourth.

Cameron DeLaney added 10 points for the Knights while Halvorson chipped in nine and Roderick Taylor had eight.

The Knights open district play at Ellison at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

No. 24 SALADO 68, GOLDTHWAITE 52: At Hamilton, tourney MVP Kase Spears scored 14 points and the 24th-ranked Salado Eagles downed Goldthwaite 68-52 for the Hamilton Tournament championship.

Dane Hankamer led Salado (14-3) with 20 points. Kyle Heiner finished with 11 and was also named to the all-tournament team.

The Eagles took command in the middle of the game, outscoring Goldthwaite 38-21 over the second and third quarters.

Salado coach Kenny Mann said his team’s transition game was the key.

“We really got the ball moving up and down the floor,” he said, “and they had a hard time playing that game.”

Salado opens District 22-2A play Tuesday in Lexington.

No. 18 LOMETA 51, EDEN 39: At Lohn, No. 18 Lometa wrapped up its first tournament title of the 2013 season Saturday with a convincing 51-39 win against Eden in the Lohn Invitational championship.

Up two after one quarter, the Hornets began to separate by halftime, heading into the locker room with a 21-15 lead.

The lead reached eight by the start of the fourth before the Hornets went out with a bang, scoring 20 in the final quarter.

Senior wing Eric Nichols scored 17 to lead Lometa while Shane Stone added 11 and Kyle Molter added 10.

Nichols was also named to the all-tournament team as was sophomore post Molter.

Lometa will be back in action Tuesday when it hosts Cherokee.


COPPERAS COVE GIRLS 70, SHOEMAKER 52: At Copperas Cove, Mikayla Gatewood scored a team-high 14 points, but the Shoemaker Lady Wolves fell to the Copperas Cove Lady Bulldawgs 70-52 on Friday.

The loss comes in Shoemaker’s first district road game (3-6, 1-1 District 8-3A) while Cove won its first game of district play (7-5, 1-1).

The Lady Bulldawgs put the Lady Wolves in a hole early jumping out to a 16-2 lead after the first quarter.

Jonnette Jackson added 10 points. Shoemaker hosts Killeen while Cove visits Waco Midway on Tuesday.
