The Coach Smith Tournament didn’t end in gold for Dane Hankamer and No. 24 Salado, but the senior earned a different type of honor Thursday.
For his efforts to help Salado reach the tournament final, including a 21-point, six-assist game against Porter to advance to the championship, Hankamer was named KDHPressbox.com Player of the Week.
The Eagles fell to Class 3A No. 18 Navasota last week, but Hankamer grabbed 62 percent of the vote against all-5A competition to become the second Salado player in a row to win the award.
Freshman guard Sara Kate Kelarek won last week with 99 percent of the vote.
Hankamer beat out Copperas Cove junior Rashard Odomes and Harker Heights senior Angela DeLaney, who each tallied 13 percent of the vote.
Odomes came up big for the Bulldawgs, dropping 30 points on the road to help Cove topple Class 4A No. 14 Austin LBJ, 66-63.
DeLaney, meanwhile, was key in helping the Lady Knights stay in the game early against God’s Academy, scoring 15 points in an eventual 57-47 home win.
Harker Heights junior C.J. Bobbitt was right behind DeLaney and Odomes with 12 percent of the vote after scoring 20 points to lead all scorers in a 68-43 win in the Knights’ home opener against God’s Academy.
Hankamer also won KDHPressbox.com Player of the Week last year after scoring 18 points to help Salado defeat Marlin in the area round of the playoffs.
Hankamer also is the defending Class 2A champion in golf after sending longtime coach Bobby Peschel out with a gold medal as a junior.
Hankamer and the Eagles basketball team continue play in the Ted Jones Tournament in Hamilton today, taking on Gatesville after defeating Lampasas 61-40 on Thursday.
