Harker Heights said multiple times as the regular season winded down that it wasn’t concerned with what happened to Shoemaker down the stretch.
Even with a potential added game to decide first place in District 8-5A, the Knights never wavered, saying they were more focused on defeating rival Killeen on the road in the teams’ regular season finale than the district standings.
“Take care of business,” they’ve said all along, “and the standings will take care of themselves.”
On Tuesday, the Knights were proven correct.
After Heights gutted out a 60-45 victory against the Kangaroos, Copperas Cove — the same team Heights had defeated just 10 days earlier in a chippy 76-67 win — gave the Knights a gift on the final day of the regular season, defeating Shoemaker 80-78 in overtime.
The Grey Wolves were one shot away from a share of the district title as Elijah Sobers put in the game-winning bucket for Cove just before time expired.
Now, the Knights are district champions of the rugged District 8-5A with just two district losses on the season.
The first came in the district opener against Ellison, a deflating 58-54 loss that the Knights later avenged with a 14-point win against the Eagles at home.
But that win was followed by the Knights’ second district loss, a 67-60 defeat at the hands of Shoemaker, the Grey Wolves’ seventh straight district win at the time.
Shoemaker went on to win 12 straight district games, entering the final week of the regular season as the hottest team in District 8-5A.
But the Grey Wolves were unable to make it 12 straight Tuesday, meaning they won’t have a share of the district title to claim this season.
There is only one team at the top of District 8-5A now, and that team is Harker Heights.
