After needing three sets to win each of its first two matches, Harker Heights’ third-set magic ran out against China Spring.

The Lady Knights opened play at the Gatesville tournament by bouncing back from an opening-set loss to Reicher to win 16-25, 25-22, 25-20 and followed it up with a 25-18, 14-25, 25-20 victory over Llano. But their 1-0 lead over China Spring would not hold. Harker Heights claimed a one-sided win in the opening set, but did not have enough to beat the Lady Cougars, who won 16-25, 25-20, 25-18 to advance to the semifinals against Belton. The Lady Knights fall into the fifth-place bracket, where they will face Temple on Saturday at 10 a.m.

The Tem-Cats (2-10) started the day off with a 25-20, 25-17 win against Hillsboro but lost to Dublin 25-19, 25-15. The Class 2A team also beat Temple’s District 8-5A rival Ellison.
