Lampasas' Shonderius Howard

Lampasas’ Shonderius Howard, right, defends Gatesville’s Justin Massey during a Feb. 8 game in Lampasas. Both players were named to the All-District 8-3A first team.

After returning to the playoffs, giving it three trips in the last four seasons, Gatesville has several reasons to believe its string of success will continue.

Three Lady Hornets landed on the 8-3A All-District teams, including two potential returners.

Along with senior point guard Sarah Latham, junior post Kayla McGiboney also represented Gatesville on the first team, while junior Brianna Poe landed on the second team.

For Lampasas, which has not reached the postseason since 2001, juniors Qadrey Tolliver and Caitlyn Shaughnessy were placed on the second team.

Following the program’s first trip to the postseason in a dozen years, four Badgers starters were recognized on the boys’ all-district list.

Lampasas’ leading scorer Shonderius Howard was placed on the first team along with teammate Gary Spencer, while fellow senior Marcus Morrison landed on the second team. Collin Bowen, a junior, is the lone player eligible to return to receive recognition, being placed on the second team.

Gatesville failed to make the playoffs this season after going in each of the two previous years, but still had a strong showing individually.

Senior guard Seth Martin, who led the Hornets in scoring, earned a position on the first team, alongside Gatesville’s junior point guard Justin Massey.

Hornets’ senior post De’Quan Cross was the program’s only second-team selection. He landed on the second team as a junior as well.
