For the first time in his professional career, Colton Smith had an opportunity to attend a training camp before a fight. But unfortunately for the III Corps staff sergeant, the result was similar to his previous two.

Smith lost via submission 39 seconds into the bout against Carlos Diego Ferreira on Saturday during the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Fight Night at the AT&T Center in San Antonio.

The loss dropped Smith’s record to 6-4 in the UFC.

Smith trained for more than a month at Jackson’s MMA in Albuquerque, N.M., his first training camp for any professional fight he’s been in.

Smith came out as the aggressor, going for the first blow with a kick to Ferreira’s upper torso that missed its mark.

After that, the two grapplers were in close proximity, with Ferreira’s back against one of the octagon’s sides. But Ferreira, a Pharr native, soon turned the tables by sliding his right leg behind Smith’s right knee for a judo takedown.

Ferreira was on top of Smith and when Smith attempted to turn around for a reversal, Ferreira quickly put his arms around Smith’s neck in a rear naked chokehold.

Colton Smith has not had 10 fights in the UFC. He is currently 1-3 in the UFC, with his lone victory coming in The Ultimate Fighter Championship - garmnering his contract with the UFC. If he continues his unimpressive showing in the UFC, he will be let go from the organization.
