WACO — Shane Johnson scored 29 points to lead the Shoemaker Grey Wolves to a 69-66 overtime road victory Tuesday against the 4A No. 12 Waco University Trojans.
Shoemaker (2-0) blew a 10-point halftime lead in the second half and needed a late 3-pointer by Patrick Mark — his only points of the game — to force overtime.
In a back-and-forth extra period, Renard Thomas (11 points) put the Wolves in front for good, 67-66, in the last 30 seconds. University missed a shot at the other end and Johnson grabbed the rebound. He was fouled and made both free throws, capping a 9-for-10 night at the foul line.
The Trojans missed a 25-footer at the buzzer that may not have counted anyway, according to Shoemaker coach Marc Minatrea.
University fell to 1-2, all against Killeen ISD opponents. The Trojans beat Killeen in their season opener before losing at Ellison on Friday.
Paris Yerry also reached double figures for Shoemaker with 10 points.
Shoemaker won’t have much time to savor the win. The Grey Wolves host San Angelo Central in their home opener today at 2:30.
Guard Ray Washington, last season’s District 8-4A MVP, led three University players in double figures with 25 points.
