Football: Copperas Cove v. UANL

Copperas Cove v. Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon Friday night at Bulldawg Stadium.

Just like his Bulldawgs dominated Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, Copperas Cove junior quarterback Manny Harris ran away with the Player of the Week title.

Harris received 60 percent of the 819 total votes, topping Shoemaker senior quarterback Ziere Banner, who received 24 percent.

On paper, the two signal callers’ performances were comparable as both topped 300 yards and accounted for four-plus touchdowns.

Banner actually had the higher output, completing 12 of 21 passes for 346 yards and four touchdowns in the Wolves’ 42-38 victory against Stony Point. He also piled up 127 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

But it was Harris who piled up 422 votes by late Wednesday afternoon thanks to a 317-yard, three-touchdown passing performance to go with a 10-yard rushing touchdown in the Bulldawgs’ 43-17 romp against Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon.

It was Harris’ third straight 300-yard game after he tossed five touchdowns the previous week against Waco and passed for a school record 516 yards against A&M Consolidated in his Copperas Cove debut.

On the season, Harris has passed for 1,169 yards and 12 touchdowns in three games.

Fellow Copperas Cove athlete Qiana Canete rounded out the field. The senior outside hitter had a team-high 21 kills along with five blocks and nine digs against Hutto and had 22 kills and five blocks to open district play against Temple.

Canete finished with 16 percent of the vote.
