The Lady Buffs hit a hot streak.

Florence (5-10, 2-2 District 22-2A) has won four straight matches, led by Player of the Week Rebecca Horton.

In wins against Salado and Rosebud-Lott, the senior averaged 18.5 kills.

Horton has team highs of 179 kills, 44 aces and 22 blocks this season. Add 28 digs and 13 assists for good measure.

She garnered 166 votes — 93 percent of the total.

“I didn’t think it would happen because it’s usually football guys on there,” Horton said. “It’s never usually a volleyball player on there.”

She beat Gatesville senior running back Jake Kee, who rushed for 245 yards and two scores in the Hornets’ 23-13 win over Taylor, and Lometa running back Pedro De Luna, who rushed for 144 yards and a touchdown on five carries and returned an interception 77 yards for a touchdown in his team’s 60-6 win over Cherokee.

As soon as she learned of her nomination, Horton spread the word to friends.

“I didn’t even know about it until one of my friends showed me,” she said.

The senior plans to play volleyball in college and is working with coach Kelly Stephens to make it happen.

Horton is a leader and the best hitter on her squad, Stephens said. She played club this year to hone her game.

“Even if she’s hurt, she works hard,” Stephens said. “She knows she needs to play well for us to win. ... (Her skills have) been increasing every game, and I think she’s kind of found her comfort zone and she feels confident in herself.”

Horton stays upbeat to maintain a high team morale, and stays humble, she said. She cautioned against having “too much attitude” on court.

“She knows she has to perform to make it to college,” Stephens said.

“She never knows when a scout is watching, so she knows she has to play well every time. I’m going to miss her next year. There’s going to be a big hole on our team next year when she’s gone.”
