Kenesha Saygo took home every accolade there was in District 8-5A last season.
But Saygo, now at Texas Woman’s University, said the most rewarding part of her senior season at Ellison was helping the Lady Eagles return to where they stood at the end of her sophomore season.
As district champions.
“We had that killer mentality,” Saygo said of the 2012-2013 Lady Eagles, “that killer instinct like nobody is going to get in the way of what we deserve.”
Ellison reached its goal of becoming district champion and Saygo was a big reason why.
In her final season as a Lady Eagle, Saygo averaged 12.2 points, 4.1 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 2.9 steals per game.
In the process, she earned District 8-5A Co-MVP honors and Killeen Daily Herald All-Area MVP honors for the season.
“She really, really worked on her game and she hated to lose,” Ellison girls coach Sherry McKinnon said. “You hear that a lot, but when I say she hated to lose, she worked on her game to make sure they didn’t lose. She put the team before herself.”
Saygo is already contributing at Texas Woman’s, where she is averaging 9.7 points and 4.1 rebounds in 16.1 minutes per game off the bench.
Even better, Saygo said she is meshing well with her Lady Pioneer teammates.
“It’s like my Ellison family,” she said.
Saygo continues to keep up with her alma mater, following the Lady Eagles every move as Ellison remains the only unbeaten team in District 8-5A this season.
“I check KDHnews.com every day,” she said with a laugh.
So Saygo will be watching closely to see if the Lady Eagles repeat as district champions bringing another crowning moment to the school.
