Killeen High School’s Tyler James and Deja Pulido each took second place at the Fifth Annual Lago Vista Spring Classic on Tuesday at the Lago Vista Golf Course.
James, an Ottawa (Kan.) University signee, shot a round of 76 and was tied with Roger’s Logan Clowers for the lead. The tie was broken because of the scorecard playoff tiebreaker.
Pulido shot a round of 89 and was one stroke behind Ingram/Tom Moore’s Ashley Vela who had the best girls round.
The Lago Vista boys team won the tournament with a team score of 326 while the Lago Vista girls team finished first with a score of 404.
James was playing in the event for the third time and Killeen head coach Kyle Winkler said James had a good day in the short game.
“The tee shots and putting were probably his strong suit in that tournament,” Winkler said. “He made some putts mid-range that he had to have and had a couple to save par.”
Pulido on the other hand was playing in the event for the first time and Winkler is confident more experience will lead to better things for the sophomore in the years to come.
Winkler said that the finish is encouraging given the fact that Pulido uncharacteristically struggled with the short irons.
“She usually does very well with it, but she struggled with it and still got second,” Winkler said.
The Killeen golf team will play a District 8-5A event Thursday at Stonetree Golf Course. The district meet is April 7-8 for the boys and April 9-10 for the girls.
