ROUND ROCK — Harker Heights head coach Jerry Edwards found himself in a similar situation he faced last week.

After leading the Round Rock Stony Point Tigers 21-14 at the half last week, the Knights were outscored 33-10 in the second half, losing 47-31 to open the season.

On Friday, Round Rock opened the second half by scoring four touchdowns and went on to beat the Knights 40-37.

After allowing more than 500 yards last week in a loss against Stony Point, the Knights defense was tested early and often against Round Rock’s potent rushing attack, which ran for 339 yards last week in an overtime loss to the Temple Wildcats.

The first quarter kicked off with an early Harker Heights score on a 5-yard rushing touchdown by Marcus Anderson II.

The Dragons took over, and after a six-play, 64-yard drive, answered with a 37-yard field goal by junior kicker Parsa Kosari.

The first quarter ended with the Knights leading 7-3, with both high-powered offenses starting slowly, and stalling often.

The second quarter began with a bang, however, as the Knights took the ball 80 yards in four minutes on a wide open touchdown pass from junior quarterback Troy Smith to senior receiver Tony Barnes.

The Dragons answered with a touchdown of their own on a 38-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Colin Hinson Jr. to sophomore receiver Zach Nash-Kelly.

The Knights offense wasn’t finished. Quarterback Troy Smith passed and ran for two more touchdowns to close the half and give Heights a 28-10 lead.

But the Dragons outscored the Knights 30-9 to end to game.

Harker Heights’ lone touchdown of the second half came on a 73-yard touchdown drive capped off by a 21-yard pass from quarterback Troy Smith, who finished the game 10 for 19 for 244 passing yards, 22 rushing yards and four total touchdowns.

Just a little luck and no major injuries these Knights might be a ball club to push the district favorites out of the picture once the race starts...
