Harker Heights hasn’t been an underdog very often this season — if at all.

The No. 11 Knights have been ranked in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll since before the season started, cracking the top 10 twice and climbing as high as No. 6.

Heights was the only ranked team in District 8-5A all season and had a target on its back because of that.

But now, heading into a Class 5A regional quarterfinal, the Knights find themselves in a different position.

When Heights takes the floor at Waco University High School at 7 p.m. Tuesday, it will not be the team with the lofty ranking by its name.

That will be DeSoto, the No. 2 team in the state and the No. 21 team in the nation, according to the MaxPreps Freeman rankings.

And the Knights are relishing the challenge.

“This is why you play the game,” Heights head coach Celneque Bobbitt said. “You can’t run and hide now. You’ve just got to play where you’ve been drafted.

“We’ve been drafted to play DeSoto, and we’re going to give them all that we’ve got.”

And Bobbitt is leaving no stone unturned in preparing for the Eagles.

Bobbitt said he’s been picking the brain of Killeen coach Reggie Huggins after Huggins’ Kangaroos played DeSoto tough in the bi-district round, trailing by just two with 1:08 to play.

Like Killeen, Heights will be the underdog against the Eagles as well.

But the Knights are excited, not scared, of being in that role for a change.
