COPPERAS COVE — The Copperas Cove Lady Bulldawgs clinched their first playoff berth since 2010 thanks to a dominating victory and a little help from state-ranked Ellison.
Copperas Cove held a commanding 39-20 at halftime and cruised to a 70-55 victory to hold up its end of a playoff-clinching scenario. Then, the Lady Bulldawgs turned their attention to the game between No. 15 Ellison and Harker Heights. Needing a Lady Eagles victory to secure a seed, Copperas Cove (21-8, 8-2 8-5A) was not disappointed as Ellison won by 21 points.
After the game, Copperas Cove head coach Teresa Durham was excited to know her team accomplished its primary objective heading into the season.
“That is a big achievement for us,” the coach said. “It is just a tribute to the hard work these kids have done to get here tonight, and then, hopefully, we will take care of business on Friday (against Belton).”
Copperas Cove sophomore guard Mikayla Blount and senior Jasmine Johnson tied for game-high scoring honors with 15 points apiece, while teammates Shawnte’ Goff and Bryaunea Hall each finished with 14 points.
