The Copperas Cove Lady Bulldawgs went into the locker room at halftime with only a five-point advantage over the Shoemaker Lady Grey Wolves, and coach Eldridge McAdams knew that wouldn’t get the job done.

He knew that his team was like a fine-tuned machine and all he had to do was push the right button.

“Coming in on the road, you’ve got to get the motor running,” McAdams said. “Once we got the motor running, it worked out.”

The Lady Dawgs had no trouble showing their bite in the final 16 minutes as Bryaunea Hall scored a game-high 23 points and Cove turned up the defensive intensity to beat Shoemaker 66-39 on Friday at the Shoemaker High Gym.

Xylina Carlisle added 15 points to help Cove (14-10, 4-5 District 8-5A) keep pace in the district playoff race.

“We have the high intensity,” Hall said. “We’re showing that we want it.”

Reshaya Parker led the Lady Wolves with eight points while Yeritza Valentin and Micayla Gatewood chipped in seven points apiece.

Shoemaker (5-17, 2-7) did struggle from the floor connecting on only 30 percent (7 for 23) from the field, but stayed in the game thanks to its ability to get to the free throw line.

Cove was whistled for 10 team fouls and made 10 of 15 foul shots (66 percent).

But the third quarter proved to be Shoemaker’s undoing as the Lady Dawgs only allowed eight shots to go up and scored 10 points off seven Lady Wolves turnovers to build a 45-32 lead after the third.

“It was a different team in the first half than in the second half,” Shoemaker coach Lori Shead said. “We didn’t really change anything as far as the game plan and strategy is concerned,”

A Hall drive to the paint sparked a 11-2 Cove run to begin the second half and five straight points by Carlisle helped Cove extend the lead to 50-32 48 seconds into the fourth quarter.

“We just got out of it,” Gatewood said. “We stopped hustling and that’s not like us, but we just stopped hustling.”

Shoemaker looks to rebound on Tuesday at Killeen while Cove hosts Waco Midway.
