COPPERAS COVE — The Copperas Cove Lady Bulldawgs trailed by seven points late in the fourth quarter, but used an 11-3 run to rally for a 59-58 win against Killeen on Tuesday.
Copperas Cove post Bryaunea Hall recorded a steal and layup to tie the score at 56-56, but Killeen post Shakiyla Williams made a basket with 1:10 remaining to reclaim a two-point advantage, 58-56.
The Lady Kangaroos (14-11, 4-4 District 8-5A), however, would not score again.
Copperas Cove sophomore Mikayla Blount grabbed an offensive rebound and made a putback to tie the score before Shawnte Goff connected on a free throw with 11 seconds remaining to clinch the victory.
Despite earning the win, Copperas Cove head coach Teresa Durham was not pleased with her team’s performance.
“They battled back, it was the ugliest game ever, but we made shots when we had to,” she said. “Killeen did a good job. They battled, they made big shots and took advantage of all of our missteps on the press. We got lucky.”
Goff scored 15 points, Jasmin Johnson added 12 and Blount finished with 11 to pace Copperas Cove (19-8, 6-2) and thwart a game-high 20-point, nine-rebound performance from Killeen forward Jasmine Goodwine.
The Lady Bulldawgs survived an ugly third quarter, when they were outscored 20-9 while missing 14 of 17 field-goal attempts.
Senior forward Esha Atkins did most of the damage for Killeen in the quarter, posting all eight of her points in the period.
