Lady Dawgs sweep pool at Austin ISD Invite, stay undefeated

AUSTIN — Copperas Cove extended its winning streak with little resistance Thursday at the Austin ISD Invitational, sweeping three matches in straight sets.

In the Lady Bulldawgs’ tournament-opening match, defending District 8-5A MVP Qiana Canete posted a team-high eight kills to go along with three digs and a pair of blocks as she led her team to a 25-11, 25-9 victory against Lehman.

Junior setter Mikayla Blount recorded a dozen assists and two aces in the win, while teammate Bryaunea Hall finished with three kills and three blocks.

Things got even better for Copperas Cove in its second game as it held Lanier to a total 12 points in the abbreviated best-of-three format, winning 25-8, 25-4 behind some strong serving. Junior libero Lily Drever delivered four aces.

Drever also contributed a team-high 16 digs, Hall had four blocks defensively and Blount and sophomore Katy Ranes finished with 11 assists each.

The Lady Bulldawgs (6-0) completed the sweep of their pool with a 25-12, 25-8 win against Austin McCallum behind an impressive showing from Hall. The middle blocker had team-highs with 11 kills and six blocks, while Canete had seven kills, two blocks and nine digs. Blount finished with 17 assists, seven digs, seven kills and a block.

The victories propel the Lady Bulldawgs into a pool with Poth, Fredericksburg and San Antonio Lee, who they will play at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon, respectively, today at Bowie High School.
