It won’t have the same meaning, but the Harker Heights Lady Knights will still have plenty to play for Tuesday when they visit Copperas Cove to end the regular season.
Minutes after Alexus Dukes gave the Lady Knights a 47-45 victory against Waco Midway on Friday, she and teammate Angela DeLaney spoke of what they’d need to do against Cove with a playoff spot on the line Tuesday.
But that was before the news of a Temple victory against Cove reached the Heights gym.
The Tem-Cats’ 51-42 win clinched a playoff spot for the Lady Knights, who were only tied with Temple for the second seed in District 8-5A after a Killeen loss to Ellison.
Upon learning the news, Heights coach Shirretha Nelson wondered aloud whether or not she was going to tell her team its playoff fate was set.
Nelson still wanted her team to play hard Tuesday, and even with its playoff ticket punched, Heights still has no lack of motivation.
For starters, the No. 2 seed is still up for grabs, and Heights needs a win and a Temple loss to clinch it outright.
If that wasn’t enough, Cove has already topped Heights twice this season, including an 18-point game at the half of the first meeting and a close win on the Lady Knights’ home floor in the second meeting.
So, Heights still has plenty to play for in its regular season finale.
The only difference is there is no chance of the Lady Knights missing the playoffs if they lose.
“That helps me,” Nelson said, “and I’m going to prepare them to play.”
