Six days before resuming district play against Waco Midway, the Harker Heights girls ran into a bit of a speed bump against 8-5A foe Copperas Cove.

But the good news for Heights is that its 60-51 loss to the Lady Bulldawgs in the McDonalds All-Star Invitational doesn’t count in the standings.

Heights is still 3-1, good for second in District 8-5A, and the only loss that counts in the standings is to defending district champion Ellison.

Now, instead of a costly loss, the Lady Knights can build off a second half in which they outscored Cove by nine points.

“Cove dominated the first half and we just came out really flat,” coach Shirretha Nelson said. “We played much better in the second half, and I’m glad we fought back.”

Sam Houston State signee Angela DeLaney led Heights in scoring with 22 against Cove, which went into the half leading 26-8.

A slow start plagued the Lady Knights in the loss to Ellison as Heights fell behind by 10 at the half after a five-point second quarter.

Saturday may have been worse as Heights put up single digits in the first two quarters.

Consistency was a talking point for Nelson heading into the Christmas vacation, and the Lady Knights appear to still be working on that.

But fortunately for Heights, Saturday was a chance to continue doing that leading up to the return of district competition Friday.

It also didn’t hurt to get a look at the team it will be facing Jan. 10 when the Lady Knights host Cove in Harker Heights.
