The playoffs may be one game away for the girls and three away for the boys in District 8-5A. Tuesday’s action will go a long way toward deciding who gets into the postseason.

There will be a total of seven games with playoff implications between the 12 remaining teams in contention in both the boys and girls playoff races.

Girls playoff picture

The Harker Heights Lady Knights (18-9, 8-5) visit Copperas Cove (16-12, 6-7) in a game that has playoff implications all over the district. Heights is tied with Temple (11-17, 8-5) for second place in district while Cove is one game behind Killeen (17-14, 7-6) for the final playoff spot.

Cove beat Heights on the road 67-56 earlier this season.

Cove needs a win and a Killeen loss to finish tied for the final playoff spot.

The Lady Roos host Temple on Tuesday and would clinch a playoff spot with a win or Cove loss. There would be a three-way tie between Killeen, Heights and Temple if the Lady Roos and Lady Dawgs both win.

Ellison (24-7, 13-0) looks to wrap up its first undefeated district title under head coach Sherry McKinnon. Ellison visits Shoemaker (6-20, 3-10).

The four teams that qualify for the Class 5A girls playoffs out of District 8-5A will play the top four teams from District 7-5A.

Two-time defending state champion No. 1 Duncanville will be District 7-5A’s No. 1 seed and will play the fourth-place team out of 8-5A. No. 21 Mansfield Timberview will play the third- place team out of 8-5A.

DeSoto will play 8-5A’s second- place team while either South Grand Prairie or Cedar Hill will play Ellison in the bi-district playoffs.

Boys playoff picture

The boys playoff race is still a long way from being decided, with Belton (5-20, 1-10) the only team to have been eliminated from playoff contention.

No. 13 Harker Heights and Shoemaker are tied for the district lead, with both teams splitting the season series. They both clinched playoff berths Friday with their victories, combined with Ellison's loss.

Killeen (20-9, 7-4) is in third place, two games back, while Cove (15-13, 6-5) is in fourth, three games back of the lead.

Ellison (14-13, 5-6) is one game out of fourth place while Waco Midway (15-13, 3-8) and Temple (9-15, 3-8) are three games out of fourth place.

Both Temple and Midway have to win out to have a chance at the playoffs. Ellison, Midway and Temple cannot win the district title.

Statistically, Cove has the hardest road to the postseason, with a home game against Killeen sandwiched between trips to Heights and Shoemaker. The Bulldawgs’ remaining opponents have a combined district record of 25-8.

Temple also has rough sledding, with home games against Killeen and Shoemaker followed by a trip to Midway. The Wildcats’ remaining opponents have a combined 19-14 record.

Killeen can knock Temple out of the playoff race with a win on Tuesday, but has a road matchup against Cove and a home date with Heights. The Kangaroos’ remaining opponents are a combined 18-15 in district.

All of Heights’ and Shoemaker’s remaining opponents have combined district marks of 14-19. The Grey Wolves play at Ellison, at Temple and at home against Cove while the Knights host Cove and Belton and visit Killeen.

Ellison and Midway appear to have the easiest remaining schedules as each team’s district opponents have a combined 13-20 record.

Ellison hosts Shoemaker and Midway before traveling to Belton. Midway plays at Belton and at Ellison and hosts Temple.

The bottom two playoff seeds out of 8-5A have a hard task in the bi-district playoffs. No. 2 DeSoto is two games ahead of No. 3 South Grand Prairie for the lead in 7-5A.

South Grand Prairie is tied with Duncanville for second in 7-5A while Cedar Hill, and Grand Prairie are fighting for the final playoff spot.
