The Belton Lady Tigers soccer team earned a share of the 2014 District 8-5A title after an 8-0 road win over Shoemaker on Friday night.
Belton finished the season 13-1, tied with Waco Midway. The Lady Tigers outscored their foes by a combined total of 81-2.
“To outscore your opponents by that wide a margin is pretty unreal,” said Belton head coach Wendy Knight. “Our offense is amazing. And for our defense to only give up just two goals at this point is incredible.”
Belton star forward Ashley Winkler opened the scoring on Friday night with a 17-yard first-half blast.
“Our midfielder Emma Villamaria gave a beautiful through-ball up to Ashley,” Knight said. “And then Ashley, like she always does, put it away.”
Belton led 2-0 at halftime. Winkler scored her second goal in the second half.
“Ashley was so dominant,” Knight said. “She was so much faster than anyone else on Shoemaker’s team so she got called offsides a few times. Their team got physical and so I decided to pull Ashley out of the game a few times. I couldn’t risk letting her get injured before we start postseason.”
“They (Shoemaker) tried to take us out of our game early,” said Winkler, a junior. “They were playing really aggressive. We played a little scared in the first half and then we picked it up in the second half and then we were able to score a lot more.”
The Lady Tigers postseason play begins on Thursday against Mansfield Timberview at Waco ISD Stadium.
“We want to prove to everyone that we are the best team in our district,” said Winkler. “It’s really important that we just focus on Thursday and not look too far ahead.”
