WACO — After pitching a shutout all the way through District 8-5A play, Belton didn’t just give up a goal in its postseason opener. The Lady Tigers gave up too many.
Duncanville hung around for 100 minutes of a 2-2 draw and finally advanced on penalty kicks in a Class 5A bi-district girls soccer match Thursday night at windy Waco ISD Stadium.
After settling playoff ties for years with shootouts — in which the shooter had a finite time to dribble and shoot, and the goalkeeper could leave its line — the University Interscholastic League implemented the World Cup-style penalty kicks this season, and it paid off for the Lady Panthers (13-6-6).
Only a pair of the Lady Tigers’ (18-4-2) penalty kicks found the net, compared to four for the Lady Panthers.
Belton’s Jamie Boone converted in between successful attempts by Duncanville’s Destiney Polk and Aliyah Mora, before Madi Goldston missed wide right for the Lady Tigers.
