With regional berths on the line, Lampasas stepped up in a big way.

Competing at the District 8-3A tennis meet at Liberty Hill on Tuesday, the Lady Badgers won the team championship, while the Badgers finished second overall, sitting three points behind Brownwood in the final standings.

The performance left Lampasas head coach Kenneth Peiser pleased with his team’s overall showing.

“Nine out of 16 players will advance to Lubbock next week,” he said regarding the upcoming Region I-3A meet. “The players should be proud of how they did. Some of the matches were intense, but they held their composure and fought through to the end to earn the trip.”

For the Lady Badgers, teammates Michaela Ellison and Carolyn Laborde finished first and second, respectively, in girls singles, while Alexi Kaufert and Laura Bynum defeated Sami McKenzie and Tara Pergande in an all-Lampasas doubles final.

After losing, McKenzie and Pergande competed in a playback match, rebounding to earn a victory.

The tandem of Lance Cofield and Marcus Morua won the boys doubles title for the Badgers, while Brian Collier won a playback match to earn his spot at the regional tournament in singles. Additionally, Tyler Connell delivered a fourth-place finish.

In mixed doubles, the Lampasas duo of Shane Moore and Rhiannon Wright finished fourth.

“There was a lot more wind than yesterday,” Peiser said, “but the kids did great.”

Gatesville also earned a spot at the regional tournament as the boys doubles team of Brad Krumnow and Holden Radle, who fell to Cofield and Morua in the finals, qualified. The appearance marks the second consecutive season the Hornets’ tandem advanced to regionals.

The two-day regional tournament will be held at McLeod Tennis Complex located on the campus of Texas Tech University in Lubbock beginning next Wednesday.
