Alyssa Conde scored with six minutes left and the Ellison Lady Eagles soccer team defeated host Harker Heights 1-0 on Friday.

“It was a battle from beginning to end, to say the least,” said Ellison head coach Matthew Watt. “We were just hoping to get a late goal and we got it.”

Ellison freshman Lulu Moreno assisted on Conde’s score.

“She (Moreno) got it in the air and got it to Alyssa,” Watt said. “Alyssa had to hit it perfectly — and she did.”

From 18 yards out, the right-footed Conde used her left foot in booting home the game-winner.

“It was a pretty crazy game, coming down to the last six minutes with both teams scoreless,” Conde said. “I received a great ball from Lulu. I could have taken a touch and settled the ball down but, being in the moment, I decided to kick it off my left foot.”

“All I was thinking was that I needed to get that ball forward,” Moreno said. “Once I saw that the ball went right to Alyssa, I knew for a fact that she’d score.”

“Lulu worked her tail off this game,” said Conde, Ellison’s captain. “Luckily, I was where we needed me to be to put that ball away. But, afterwards, we still had to play a strong final six minutes. I told our team to stay strong, stay composed and I told them to play with all you’ve got these last six minutes.”

Her teammates listened.

“We pay attention to Alyssa,” Moreno said. “She’s the brains and heart of our team. It’s an awesome privilege to be on the same field as her.”

The win upped Ellison’s District 8-5A record to 2-2 (5-8 overall). Heights fell to 2-2 in district action.

Ellison junior keeper Ashley Street was credited with the shutout, saving 13 shots.

“Ashley was excellent tonight,” Watt said. “She gives us confidence in the back.”

Conde said she hopes this win gives an extra shot of confidence to her squad.

“Our team knew how important this game was tonight,” Conde said. “Every one of us was in the right mindset for this contest. I think this win will be really good for us as a team. We’re striving to make the playoffs this year and to come through like we did tonight, I think, will be huge for us.”
