LAMPASAS — Home court advantage made no difference for Lampasas.
The Lady Badgers made critical mistakes during the final moments of both of their games during the opening day of the Lady Badger Holiday Tournament on Friday, finishing last in their three-team bracket.
Despite failing to earn a victory, Lampasas head coach Jenny Bowden drew positives from the outcomes.
“We’ve got to learn to finish,” she said.
“But if we keep getting after it, we’ll be OK. I’ve got confidence in these girls; they are a good group of girls who work hard, but we’ve just got to figure out how to finish.”
After jumping out to an 11-2 lead by the end of the first quarter, Lampasas was forced to rally late, scoring nine unanswered points to start the fourth quarter to regain a 32-31 advantage with 4:15 remaining.
The lead was short-lived, however, as the Lady Billies used an and-1 free throw to immediately reclaim the lead. Lampasas junior guard Caitlyn Shaughnessy tied the game at 34-34, but Fredericksburg closed the game on an 8-1 run to secure a 42-35 victory as Lampasas finished with 42 turnovers.
The Lady Badgers came out flat in their second game, trailing 16-6 in the second quarter before going into halftime down 22-12.
Lampasas mounted a comeback, though, and led 30-29 following Alexis Theus’ basket with 5:20 remaining in the game, but the Lady Cats scored seven consecutive points, creating a 37-30 cushion.
The Lady Badgers cut the deficit to a point, 37-36, on Theus’ free throw, but could not get any closer, losing 38-36.
With the defeat, Lampasas (8-8) fell into the bronze bracket, opening play today against Killeen’s junior varsity team at 9 a.m. The winner advances to face the winner between Lake Travis and Early at 2:15 p.m.
While disappointed with the outcomes, Bowden knew her home tournament would be difficult, and she is content with losing as long as the effort is there.
“There are positives,” she said.
“I would have liked to win, but I’d rather have these games, these hard games, while getting ready for district than just some easy games.”
