Lometa’s cross country team lacks varsity experience, but the Hornets are quickly learning as they go.

With only one upperclassman on the roster, Lometa is competing with a pair of freshmen and a trio of sophomores this season, but at the team’s annual meet, the group performed beyond its years.

Racing at Lometa Regional Park, the young Hornets finished second at Wednesday afternoon’s home invitational meet.

“It was a good cross country meet,” Lometa first-year head coach David Fisher said. “(Turnouts for) the high school divisions were a little low, but they were competitive.”

Led by freshman Isreal Enriquez, who placed eighth overall with a time of 21 minutes, three seconds, all the Hornets produced top-16 showings. Underclassmen Ivan Jasso, a sophomore, and David Franco, a freshman, finished within two seconds of each other, posting times of 21:30 and 21:32, respectively, while sophomore teammate Reid Moore (23:16) was 15th overall.

Ty Pauly, the Hornets’ lone senior, tied with Moore, but was placed 16th in the final standings.

The Lady Hornets, who are just as young and inexperienced as the boys, did not field a complete team, but still produced a solid showing with both runners placing in the top 14. With a time of 17:55, sophomore Maclinta Alaniz finished 12th overall, while freshman Isabella Gill crossed two spots behind her teammate, completing the course in 20:35.

In addition to competing against the field, participants had to deal with temperatures reaching the mid-90s for the 2 p.m. start. “I was real proud of my runners,” Fisher said. “All of the runners ran with full effort and did not let the heat bother them.”

Lometa is off until Oct. 5, when it travels to Hamilton for a morning meet beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Perry Country Club.
