The Killeen Independent School District has reassigned Shoemaker head boys basketball coach Marc Minatrea and posted a job opening for his former position on its website.

Minatrea, who’s held the title of Grey Wolves head basketball coach for the last seven years, declined to speak publicly when contacted by the Daily Herald on Monday evening.

The posting went up April 1, though KISD officials wouldn’t elaborate on the opening, except to confirm Minatrea is still at Shoemaker in some capacity, just not head basketball coach.

“Killeen ISD is unable to discuss the details regarding the reassignment of Coach Minatrea as it pertains to a personnel matter,” KISD Public Information Officer Leslie Gilmore said in a statement. “The campus and district will work hard to ensure that the best interests of the Shoemaker High School students, staff and the Grey Wolves basketball program remain a top priority.”

When reached, Shoemaker athletic coordinator Channon Hall could not comment on Minatrea’s job status.

“I’m not supposed to speak on that at this time,” Hall said. “It’s just something that ... I guess it opened up last week.”

The job posting closes April 26 and includes the responsibilities of: “develop(ing) a successful boys basketball program, beginning with the seventh grade program and continuing through high school, while maintaining and enhancing the integrity of Killeen ISD.”

In seven years at Shoemaker, Minatrea compiled a 133-94 overall record, including 52-42 in district, and had the Grey Wolves routinely in the playoff hunt.

Since being hired away from then-3A Cameron Yoe in July 2006, Minatrea has led Shoemaker to three playoff appearances, two coming in the last two seasons, including an area-round appearance in 2012.

Minatrea’s final season with the Grey Wolves was one of his best at the helm, as Shoemaker flirted with a shot at the district championship before earning the second seed in District 8-5A. After knocking off eventual 8-5A champion Ellison 60-58 on Feb. 5, the Grey Wolves (26-9, 11-3 8-5A) came within a game of the 8-5A title, but fell to a red-hot Copperas Cove team, 73-72, in overtime in the regular-season finale and had to settle for second. Shoemaker’s season ended a week later when 7-5A power Cedar Hill knocked off the Grey Wolves 42-38 in their Region I-5A bi-district playoff game Feb. 19.

Minatrea also ran afoul of KISD administrators at times, including a two-week suspension in January 2011 for what was described as “administrative reasons.” He also had several on-court outbursts that caused issues for administrators, including slamming a chair on his way off the court following the loss to Cove in the regular-season finale, though it is unclear if either or any of these incidents played a part in his reassignment.
