Cameron Woodberry and Brittany Mitchell paced their way to gold, but neither could do the same for their teams in the District 8-5A cross country meet Wednesday at the HOT Soccer Complex in Waco.
Mitchell, the Killeen junior, won her third straight individual district crown despite a jump up a classification, crossing the finish line in just over 19 minutes (19:02) as the lone Lady Roos runner in the top 20.
Harker Heights took advantage, winning the girls team trophy with senior Christina Cortez and freshman Charlotte Fleming leading the way in fourth (19:30) and fifth place (19:38), respectively.
“It’s awesome. It’s only the second time we’ve won the district here at Harker Heights,” head coach Michelle Womack said.
The Lady Knights, who had five runners in the top 18, beat out Belton 54-64 after the Lady Tigers’ Macy Neimi and Katey Hatter finished ninth and 10th to lead four runners in the top 15. Temple took third as a team with second- and third-place finishes from juniors Alexis Phelps and Emma MacEachern.
The top three teams and top-10 individuals advance to the Region I-5A meet Nov. 3 at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock. Also earning a trip to the region meet was Copperas Cove’s Fabby Andujar, who took sixth (19:47). Woodberry won the boys’ individual title with a time of 15:50, a full 10 seconds ahead of runner-up teammate Leonard Kim to lead three top-10 finishers for the Bulldawgs, who took runner-up in the team standings behind champion Belton 50-56.
Harker Heights finished third thanks to a third-place individual finish from junior Scott McEwan (16:06) before a Tiger trio of Ridge Hale, John Jennings and Jonathan Lopez took fourth, fifth and seventh place respectively.
“We’ve had no true superstar but we’ve had four or five girls run real close together and that’s huge in cross country,” Womack said.
