Unlike her game against Copperas Cove, in which she scored the final four goals for the Ellison Lady Eagles, Lulu Moreno needed every last minute to win the KDHPressbox.com Player of the Week award.
In the end, Moreno narrowly won the honor, tallying 765 votes — four more than runner-up Shyenne Hicks, a senior pitcher for Salado.
“Throughout the whole entire week there was really so much anxiety going around for everyone who was supporting me,” Moreno said. “Everyone was getting their votes in and continuing to do that every hour.
“And I really want to thank them for supporting me and voting every hour.”
Moreno earned 55 percent of the vote while Hicks — a Texas A&M-Kingsville signee and the MVP of the Lady Lobo Classic in Longview — received 50 percent.
Also nominated were a pair of Copperas Cove boys, junior Rashard Odomes — who scored 25 points twice in wins against Shoemaker and Killeen — and James Norris, who rolled nine straight strikes to help Cove clinch the district title in a win against Harker Heights.
But the freshman Moreno took the honor for her impressive performance.
Moreno said before the game against Cove, her stomach began to hurt and she was nauseous. But it didn’t show early as Moreno notched a hat trick in the first half.
“I was really in shock,” Moreno said of the performance. “I really couldn’t feel anything because I was so much in shock.”
Moreno was still stunned after she added a goal to her total in the second half for her first four-goal game at any level. She also scored two goals against Shoemaker last week.
In the end, she gave all the credit to her teammates.
“None of this could have happened without my teammates,” she said. “They got the ball up to me to where I can kick a perfect, easy shot in.”
The same way her teammates made it easy for her to score a career-high against Cove, Moreno said they’ve also made it easy for her to adjust to being a freshman on varsity.
“It feels amazing because I’m on a team where everyone accepts me,” Moreno said. “It’s just awesome.”
