University of North Texas and former Ellison hurdler Steven White finished second in his heat and qualified for the finals in the 400-meter hurdles on the first day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Wednesday in Eugene, Ore.

White, making his second-straight trip to the outdoor championships, finished in 49.82 seconds, the fourth-fastest qualifying time.

His former Ellison teammates didn’t fair nearly as well.

Prezel Hardy and Michael Bryan failed to qualify for the finals in the 100 meters for Texas A&M.

Another former Eagles track standout currently running for the Aggies, Hector Hernandez, also failed to advance in in the 800 meters.

Hardy was the closest, finishing fourth in his heat. He finished in 10.11 seconds, the ninth-fastest time posted Wednesday, but only the top-two finishers in each event and the next two fastest times qualify for the 8-person final.

Bryan finished eighth in the first 100-meters heat in 10.35. Hernandez finished fifth in his 800-meters heat (1:51.37).

Former Ellison Lady Eagle Maya Williamson (Memphis) finished seventh in her 400-meter hurdles event in 59.52.

Former Harker Heights standout and current University of Texas decathlete finished first in his shot put heat (45 feet, 7¾ inches). second in his 100-meters heat (10.61), third in his 400 heat (48.25) and sixth in his long jump (24-4½) and high jump (6-2¾) heats.
