The Shoemaker defense has been the key to many of its victories this season, most notably a road win against first-place Waco Midway.
And Friday the defense set the tone again in the win that clinched the Grey Wolves’ second playoff berth in school history, a 34-9 victory against Ellison at Leo Buckley Stadium.
“Our kids have been working since about June 15, every day, 95 percent of my kids,” Shoemaker coach Channon Hall said, “and this is the work that paid off for them and my staff, who have done a great job all year long.”
Shoemaker (7-3, 5-2 in District 8-5A) held Ellison (0-10, 0-7) to just 2 rushing yards in the game and stopped Ellison for negative yardage on at least one play in 10 of 13 drives. The Grey Wolves also picked off two passes and blocked a punt in the game.
“D-line, they’re nasty. And the linebackers are nasty,” said cornerback Dwayne Williams, who recorded his 10th interception of the season in the first quarter. “We’ve got them up front putting pressure, and we’ve got the secondary in the back.”
