JARRELL — James Klepac said he couldn’t feel his left foot Tuesday. But the Jarrell forward could feel the thrill of a win.
Klepac scored 17 points in helping No. 14 Jarrell edge No. 13 Salado 57-55 in an overtime thriller with the District 22-2A lead on the line.
Klepac found Houston Stewart for a layup with 1:29 remaining in overtime to give Jarrell a 51-49 lead it would not relinquish. It was one of four assists by Klepac to go with 11 rebounds.
Salado had a couple chances to tie the game after Stewart’s basket. Jarrell (24-3, 9-1) had a 53-51 lead with 22.05 seconds remaining when Tyler Ramthun was fouled, but after making the first free throw his second attempt rolled off the rim. Kase Spears made a 3-pointer for Salado (21-7, 9-1) with four seconds left, but the Eagles had no timeouts left and Jarrell let the closing seconds tick away.
“They have a height advantage on us,” Salado coach Kenny Mann said. “They had trouble hitting 3s last time, but when they hit them tonight we had to come out after them.”
Mann said having forward Austin Adams hurt by foul trouble was also a factor. Adams finished with eight points. Salado did get 15 points from Womac.
Salado hosts Academy on Friday, while Jarrell plays at Rogers. Mann said if both Salado and Jarrell win their four remaining district games he would be willing to play a tiebreaker game for the district title.
“If we just play a warm-up game it may not help that much for the playoffs,” Mann said. “If the atmosphere is anything like it was tonight it would be good preparation.”
