In her first season on the Ellison varsity squad, Francesca Patrick was a defensive-minded player on a senior-laden team that won the 2012 District 8-5A title.

This year, the Lady Eagles are counting on Patrick to do more.

With her team in a rut offensively against No. 8 Georgetown, Patrick got Ellison going offensively and pulled down a game-high seven rebounds to help the Lady Eagles defeat the defending Class 4A state champs 36-28.

The performance helped Patrick earn Player of the Week honors. The Ellison senior garnered 63 percent of the final tally.

Copperas Cove senior Brittany Gamble was second with 36 percent of the vote after scoring 20 points on 8 of 11 shooting in the Lady Dawgs’ 70-40 win against Waco.

Harker Heights junior Celneque Bobbitt II, who scored a game-high 18 points in the Knights’ season opening win against Austin Reagan, was third.

Patrick had the lowest point total of the participants, but her performance went beyond the box score.

The senior floor general helped Ellison stick to its gameplan, staying patient on offense against the suffocating Georgetown defense.

Ellison had a hard time putting the ball in the basket, ending the first quarter with a 4-0 lead.

Things changed when Patrick came alive late in the second quarter, starting with a steal and a layup that put her team up 10-3 with 4:01 remaining in the first half.

She later added a jumper at the top of the key in the final minute of the half, then drilled a corner 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Ellison a 14-3 lead at halftime.

Patrick scored all of her points and grabbed both steals in the first half. She finished with the nine rebounds and a pair of assists.

It was the type of performance coach Sherry McKinnon said she expected from Patrick.

She’ll look to continue her contributions as the No. 21 Lady Eagles (7-1) host No. 3 Round Rock Stony Point at 6 p.m. today.
