Part of a committee of offensive playmakers, Shoemaker senior running back Rayshun Spearman’s efforts have often been overlooked because of the dual-threat ability of senior quarterback Ziere Banner and the acrobatics and speed of senior receivers Qwoy Blunt and Nahome Anderson.

But last Friday against Harker Heights, Spearman’s dominance was undeniable. He averaged 14 yards per carry, and rushed for 112 yards and two touchdowns, including a 70-yarder.

“The holes, they were clogged up, so I cut to the outside,” Spearman said. “I saw green grass and I kept running.”

Spearman said it is easier to rally and find a rhythm with so many offensive playmakers.

A Monday morning text message from Banner alerted Spearman about his player of the week nomination, Spearman said.

From there, the votes spiked and continued at a rapid pace through 4 p.m. Thursday.

Spearman collected 449 tallies, 178 ahead of Copperas Cove quarterback Manny Harris and 447 ahead of Temple’s Jeff Carr/Marques Hatcher running back tandem.

Spearman said he set a goal to rush for 100 yards and two scores last week.

“I was pretty satisfied, because I reached my goal and all my hard work paid off,” he said. “This season, it was a goal to win Player of the Week.”

On the season, Spearman averages 7.7 yards per carry and has scored five touchdowns.

He also handles the Grey Wolves’ punting duties, and has a season long of 56 yards.

Coaches taught Spearman and his teammates to stay grounded, he said.

“Basically, just stay humble and don’t get a big head, and play your game.”
